Psychologycal analysis based the writer psychology into the intention of the movie
This movie tell that the American western culture is greatest than eastern culture in Japan. It showed in the separation between Japanese goverment and a little society of Japan called Samurai. It is mention that eastern culture, whose they have God and high discipline and attitude, not better than American culture which they ever separated too in fighting a part society of their own country, Indian race. Both of those culture is just same. It because in 1976 zwick get his first work in television as a producer, director, and writer. So, in this movie Zwick take the time setting in 1976 to emphasize what a powerfull the American modernisation to Japan, until it can separate Japan in that time.
Psychologycal analysis based the character Nathan Algren and Katsumoto
Why Algren want to join with Katsumoto in rebelion, wereas he doesn’t like to kill people?
How can katsumoto confidence to fight Japanese army and their modern gun by their sword?
As the ex-American captain, Algren surely have many experiences about war, he definitely know what the situation happen in the such condition, which from the Samurai side just using sword and spear will be impossible to fight the modern gun that can kill many people in one shoot. After being a prisoner of Samurai, he may learn to receive the truth. He found the peacefulness by whatcing several polite people in Samurai. Algren falling in love to those peacefulness people, especially Katsumoto. He thanksfull to Katsumoto because of let him alive and give many knowladge that never get before. He decide to help Katsumoto although he have know the ending that Katsumoto just death in that war.
In the conversation with Katsumoto, Algren said that colonel Custer, his master in war against Indian, is the stupid arrogant captain who lead his soldiers to fight and kill Indian race from his own country. But, for Katsumoto, General Custer is awesome captain who can kill much number of knight and got an honor death in the war. It become the spirit example for Samurai to protect their inheritance from modernisasi. The other reason is that the defeat is ashamed. For them, better suicide than his inheritance defeated by modernisation.
Conclusion
The separation between the goverment and Samurai happens because of the modernisation. To make the modernisation may received universally, they should be combine both of modernisation and ancestor anxiety.
For American people, killing someone is the bad embarassed thing, whether in Japan, should be killing each other to get the respect and tight up their pride.
